Advocacy in Ontario
The Consumers Council of Canada has represented the interests of residential consumers for years with respect to energy matters in Ontario.
The Council is the major intervenor before the Ontario Energy Board representing the residential consumer. As part of its mandate, the Council seeks fair decisions for Ontario residential energy consumers (of both electricity and natural gas) before the Ontario Energy Board. The Council has appeared at rate proceedings and in applications before the Ontario Energy Board by Licensed Energy Distributors, Hydro One Networks Inc., and Ontario Power Generation Inc., as well as applications by natural gas distribution companies.
The Council has also appeared in numerous policy-making proceedings before the Ontario Energy Board in the electricity and natural gas sectors, and has made submissions to legislative committees and a variety of advisory committees on proposed changes to laws governing the energy sector. As well, the Council has participated in numerous policy-making proceedings before the Ontario Energy Board related to the electricity and natural gas sectors.
While appearing before the Ontario Energy Board, the Council has received cost awards to fund its participation in various proceedings before the Ontario Energy Board, in recognition of the value it has added to proceedings as an advocate for consumers.
