Council Talks Consumer Rights on Parliament Hill

The Consumers Council of Canada joined the three other member organizations of the Canadian Consumer Initiative on Parliament Hill Nov. 2-4 to express a common message about consumer rights.

CCI members discussed the following issues, among others, with Parliamentarians and senior government officials:

  • The withdrawal of the TD Banking Group and Royal Bank of Canada from the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments dispute resolution process
  • Consumer rights in proposed copyright legislation
  • Consumer protection in telecommunications services
  • The stumble into over-the-air digital TV
  • The inadequate support for consumer representation in policy setting

Consumers hold onto Ontario cabinet seat

As requested by the Consumers Council of Canada, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty choose to continue with a separate minister for consumer affairs in his cabinet, a step the Council has considered an important indicator of the importance the Ontario government may place on consumer protection during its current term. Click here to learn more

People are finding damaging information about themselves on the Internet, and they may not know what to do about it. A Consumers Council of Canada research project entitled “Canadian Consumers: Online Reputations, Awareness, Misuse and Repair” investigated the industry that has emerged to manage and fix reputations online. The report also suggests ways consumers can manage their online reputations proactively and reactively. New members with expert interest sought

The Consumers Council of Canada is seeking new members with expertise and a personal, professional or academic interest in electronic payments, reward systems, telecommunications, broadcasting, new media and electronic commerce, sustainable consumption, consumer complaints handling and health and food safety and services. Members will be invited to participate in policy development and consumer representation activities and be eligible to serve on the Council's issues committees or seek election to the Council's board of directors.
